2005 JUNIOR TOURING CARS

The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) enjoys the support of several high quality support championships, including the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup, and the Seat Cupra Championship, which was a brand new initiative in 2003, promoted by Seat to develop driver talent in Europe. The Seat championship winner will receive the prize of a test drive with Seat UK in the British Touring Car Championship (see www.tocatour.co.uk for details of the BTCC).

The Renault Clio championship is featured in regular Channel 4 terrestrial TV programs throughout the season, with further coverage on satellite broadcasts.

The Seat Cupra Championship is featured throughout the season in a dedicated TV docu-soap, another innovation by Seat, allowing the public to get to know the drivers (and consequently their sponsors) as they battle for championship honours. Through 2004, six half-hour programs were broadcast on ITV1, with a further six one hour programs on ITV2.

THE CARS

The 2 litre Renault Clio format has remained largely unchanged for several years, the 190bhp engines and sequential gearboxes providing reliable power in a lightweight 900kg bodyshell. The adjustable suspension gives teams and drivers the chance to optimise the car according to the track and conditions, and the series runs Michelin control slicks and wets, generating close racing throughout the year.

The Seat grid will consist of identical SEAT Sport-built 1781cc turbo-charged Leon Cupra R race cars, developing 250bhp. The cars are built from its shell up to be a racing car and weigh just 1050kg. They use a six speed manual H-pattern gearbox, and run with Pirelli slick tyres mounted on 18 inch wheels. These are very serious junior touring cars!
