ETCC

2005 WORLD TOURING CARS

The European Touring Car Championship has thrived in recent years, with an intense car manufacturer battle between Alfa Romeo and BMW providing close and exciting racing. More manufacturers are joining every year and the series is fast becoming renowned as the premier "tin-top" title to win, attracting drivers from many countries around the world. This has led to the the ETCC evolving into the WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) for 2005, the first time this format has been run since 1987!

WTCC events are televised by Eurosport and the TV viewing audience of the ETCC increased by 50% vs 2001; the last round of 2002 at Estoril (Portugal) was watched by approx 6 million viewers. The TV coverage is then sold on to further broadcasting companies in Europe, N. America, Africa and Asia, reaching an estimated 301 million households worldwide.

Average crowd attendance per event over the 2002 season was approximately 30,000 people, with the maximum being over 90,000 fans at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium.

RACE DAY FORMAT

The race format consists of two sprint races, with the starting grid of the second race being the finishing order of the first. However, the top six are reversed, which provides some spectacular action in the second race!
